Care Home Open Day
Residents and staff celebrated the Queens 92nd Birthday in true Barty Style with a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on National Care Home Open Day!
Staff dressed for the occasion as all the Mad Hatter characters and had a fabulous day entertaining the residents and Bearsted locals when they nipped down to the local pub (Oak on the Green) to sell a few raffle tickets and promote the event! The cricketers on the green, and the travelling Circus who were in town thought nothing of a big white rabbit, flamingo and a Mad Hatter milling about amongst them.
The brief set out for the Barty Bake Off was to make a cake fit for a Queen in honour of the Queens Birthday, our very own Queen of Hearts 101 year old Dorothy was tasked with choosing the winning cake to be auctioned off in the afternoon. Not surprisingly she didn’t choose Nurse Paula’s Bristol Stool Chart Cake, but instead opted for the residents own entry.
The first ever Barty Cake Auction had an anonymous online bidder and also a bidder on the phone, the bidding was frenetic with arms waving from residents and visitors, but the winning bid of £26.00 came from staff member Kim who then donated the cake back to the residents as she is on a diet! All the other cake went as raffle prizes, Adam Mercer who had been enjoying a pint in the Oak on the Green earlier in the day when he was approached by the Mad Hatter, won a beautiful two tier cake. Luckily it was his grandmothers 89th birthday the next day so he was thrilled when he came to collect it.
The day was a fantastic success and great fun was had by all, and we also managed to raise £217.00 towards a day out at the beach for the residents later on in the year.
Huge thank you to everyone involved, especially all those who baked fabulous cakes!
