Assistant Practitioner

Carey joined the organisation in 2016 as a care assistant. This was her first role within the industry, having left the Civil Service after 20 years to care for her mother who had suffered a stroke.

Although her mother later moved to a nursing home, Carey really enjoyed looking after her and working with the home carers, and so decided that a move into health and social care would be a new and fulfilling challenge.

She rapidly achieved promotion, completing her NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care, and then moved to a new Level 5 role – Assistant Practitioner. This meant she faced a very comprehensive and testing two-year training programme, which she has now completed.

Day to day, Carey oversees a team of care assistants and is responsible for the general delivery of care. She liaises with medical and non-medical external partners regarding resident referrals and attends meetings to advocate on their behalf. Carey has also completed assessments for potential new residents.

“Working here has opened up a whole new career and a passion for dementia care, and I’ve started a part-time Masters degree in Dementia,” she says. “The driver within the home is to give the best care to residents and, to that end, fully equip staff. I am involved with training the trainer and am also working towards delivering a culture of change that will promote a cohesive and enhanced living experience for residents and their families throughout the home.”
