At Canford Healthcare we value our team highly and invest lots of resources in ensuring that you each have the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to excel in your role. For us, creating a trained and dedicated workforce whereby individuals and teams can develop and progress is paramount.
When you join you will be enrolled in a relevant and ongoing programme of training and development delivered by our in-house development team.
Our face-to-face training is supported by an online learning system which enables you to complete theory training topics on-line from your phone, laptop or tablet. It also sends reminders when your training is due to renew. The system has a large catalogue of additional care and clinical topics to develop your skills and career with us.
There are opportunities to attend relevant courses and seminars outside the organisation. We also encourage you to study for professional qualifications and provide support on your learning journey.
During your first 12 weeks with us you will receive a specific, job-related induction to learn about the company, our policies, values and standards .
If you are new to care you will complete the Care Certificate during your induction. This was developed jointly by Skills for Care, Health Education England and Skills for Health to teach all health and social care staff across England a consistent set of knowledge, skills and behaviours.
The standards cover 15 areas: understand your role; your personal development; duty of care; equality and diversity; working in a person-centred way; communication; privacy and dignity; fluids and nutrition; awareness of mental health, dementia and learning disabilities; safeguarding adults; safeguarding children; basic life support; health and safety; handling information and infection prevention and control.
Ongoing feedback on performance is a key part of our development process. This takes place regularly via supervision sessions with your line manager and also through the appraisal process. These structured two-way discussions are designed to help you to understand your strengths and areas for development. During these sessions we look at how you can develop within your current role or move to another, setting goals and objectives for the year ahead that are aligned with those of the business. We also support you to undergo additional on-the-job training or study for professional qualifications if these are necessary to achieve your objectives and/or if you wish to pursue these.
Apprenticeships (NVQs) are work-based qualifications that recognise the skills and knowledge needed by someone to excel in their role. Within Canford Healthcare, we look upon apprenticeships as a useful way for new or longer-serving members of staff to gain relevant on-the-job practical skills, knowledge and experience. Some staff go on to study for further qualifications in, for example, health and social care management or business administration.
Nurses are responsible for revalidation, the three-yearly process whereby they demonstrate that they practise safely and effectively as a nurse so they can maintain their Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) registration. We also support the renewal of subscription fees to such organisations as the NMC.
