Since arriving at Heathlands Care Home as manager in March 2024, Gladys’ determination, stamina and kindness have had a tremendously positive influence on residents, staff and families alike.
Gladys is an extremely well-qualified and highly skilled nurse who boasts 25 years’ experience of working in hospitals and care/nursing homes. Over the past few months, she has devoted herself to building strong relationships with residents, relatives, staff, our support offices, the local authority and the community. This relational focus has laid a solid foundation for the remarkable progress seen at Heathlands.
Both Gladys and her deputy, Rongia Joby, are highly visible presences within the home. They walk the floor regularly, observing daily operations and supporting where necessary.
Open and honest communication with staff is at the core of Gladys’ management style. She holds frequent conversations about successes and areas for improvement, ensuring that team members are equipped with the right knowledge and skills.
Her vision is clear: to provide the best care in the most comfortable and pleasant surroundings. Her approach emphasises the importance of every staff member’s role, highlighting how their actions directly impact the wellbeing of residents. By showing her staff how valued they are, Gladys has boosted morale and created a motivated, cohesive team.
Her ability to influence and inspire has earned admiration from colleagues and a nomination for this year’s Great British Care Awards.
“Gladys influences people without their realising it. She is absolutely changing the culture – bit by bit, staff have got behind her vision. In fact, she’s done a year’s work in just three months!” says Emma Seamons, Head of HR.
These positive changes are being reflected in good reviews, with praise for the “immaculate” home, “first-rate” care that meets residents’ needs, good choice and “beautiful presentation” of food, “excellent care of clothes” and the “courteous, friendly and positive” behaviour of staff. The activities team has also been commended for being “enthusiastic, caring, and lovely”.
In just a few months, Gladys has laid the groundwork for long-term success at here at Heathlands. Her leadership, compassion and vision have set a new standard for care, ensuring that residents thrive in a supportive and enriching environment. Under her guidance, the future of Heathlands is bright, promising continued excellence and positive engagement with residents, staff, families and the wider community.
